While filling the real estate section of a newspaper, it's not uncommon to have to rearrange the entire page layout. However, doing so can be challenging given the limited time and the fact that colleagues are depending on you. Modifying or rebuilding existing gap-fillers to fit in unused space can also be difficult.
That's why my colleague Peter and I came up with the idea of creating an easy-to-use and gap-filling font. I began by sketching various floors with different architectural styles, and I became so engrossed in the process that after just three days, I presented the new font "hausgemacht" (the German word for "homemade"), which included 24 characters. An important aspect of the font was that the houses remained subtle and had a light appearance. The houses should not detract from the real estate advertisements themselves.
It is now possible to easily fill gaps on the real estate site by simply typing a few keystrokes to build the houses directly into the layout.
I added a short description to the font and "homemade" was ready to go.
